The outfits Vince rocks in the show are nice. I especially liked the flower Carhart jacket he wore in this episode. I don’t know clothes well, it’s similar to cars for me. I can point and go “ooo that’s nice”, but there’s little chance I can explain why.
The main element of this episode that I’ve constantly thought about is. Vince’s “fame” as a rapper, still hasn’t gained him favor everywhere. As a young dreamer, I’ve thought more than once that achieving things would gain me acceptance in certain circles. In this episode, Vince walks into the bank seemingly thinking “I have a huge advance for my albums, and some bread in the bank. Of course I’ll be accepted here.” Of course this isn’t how real life works. It would be nice if it was.
I can’t imagine my dreams completely coming true, and still being rejected from places I thought would surely accept me. I think part of many people’s dream is to receive more respect, wherever they’re seeking it. This episode reminds us that status held in high regard with one demographic, can seem lowly with others. It’s really about whose opinion matters most to you.
The next theme from the episode that I’ve thought about, is linking up with old friends. Now that I’m getting old enough to have old or former close friends. Episodes like these hit harder. In real life, these link ups are so random. Only sometimes, do they go how we expect. I’m sure Vince never thought he’d run into his old friend mid bank robbery. It’s funnily realistic that no matter how strange the circumstances, Vince was genuinely happy to see him. No matter when I run into an old friend, I’m happy to see them.
When the bank manager doesn’t know how to deal with the police at the end of the episode, it costs him his life. The police can be dangerous in the U.S. no matter who you are. Vince is able to create situations in this episode, where being black is an advantage. We hear and see so much negativity in regards to our race. It’s heartwarming to see a man actually be safer because he is black, not more vulnerable.
