It’s sad how commonplace jail is for black American men. It would practically be unrealistic to have a black American male protaganist, and jail not be somewhere on his radar. I found it interesting that Vince finds himself in jail in the first 3 minutes of episode 1. We see him speeding by to start the scene. The next scene he’s being housed with violent criminals, crackheads, and crazy people. Showing just how easily someone can find themselves in jail.

As a celebrity he is not impervious to the bullshit that Americans face. In fact, his immediate situation may be worse. If you want to be anything in jail it’s anonymous. I can’t imagine being plucked out of a G-Wagon and then shoved into a cage. I see Vince in the episode as an example of so many people sitting in American jails, who are simply unlucky. Hopefully this episode can dispel some of the idea that all people in jails are bad people. Our system really will just have a nigga jammed up for nothing.

I’ve thought a lot about the fact that Vince didn’t have anyone to bail him out. As I sit here thinking about this, a celebrity would have to be very careful about who they call. Call the wrong person, and TMZ could be waiting outside. If I would’ve called my two closest family members and they both said no to bailing me out, I would’ve been sick.

I’ve also thought a lot about him not calling Deja. Vince was so scared of being judged by her, that he just sat in jail. He would rather create a shank and fight a man to the death. Then call his new gal to bail him out. I don’t have a point to make saying this. He is just really trying to present his best self to his woman to the death. He really handled the whole situation well. Much better tha I would’ve.

I like shows that present an element of ridiculousness. For example, why is there an UNO card in the sack lunch sandwich? And what flavor is the card?! What does that even mean?! It doesn’t matter, but I’m glad it was added. Most things in jail don’t make sense, so why not add in anything right? Between that and the man shitting out a crack pipe to get ONE hit. There are more than enough absurd happenings for one episode.

In the final scene, Vince comes home from being in jail all day and posts up on the couch. First off, you have to change your clothes AT LEAST. Jail is disgusting. Secondly, when Deja walks in and asks how his day was, he doesn’t mention jail. How long is he going to wait to tell her? Or is he just never going to say anything about it? She’ll eventually find out. I’m sure she actually found out the next morning. She’s for sure asking why his car isn’t parked outside the crib.
